No heavy loads

announcementSeattle Piers 62 & 63 are a public park. They were built in the 1920s as a normal cargo pier. The piers used to host the annual Summer Nights at the Pier concert series, but this was discontinued in recent years because of the deterioration of the piers and concerns about their ability to support the weight of the event. A $29M project will begin in fall 2017 to rebuild a substantial portion of the two piers so that events may be held there again. EPACC will meet at 8am on Friday 19th August 2016 on Seattle Pier 62 or 63, depending on where we find a spot. Watch out for splinters. Here’s a map.

B.F. Deal

According to the city, this park was originally a gravel mine (like other Seattle parks) owned by Nils Peterson. It was later given to the city by B. F. Day. As to who David Rogers is… I couldn’t find any information. EPACC will meet at 8am on Friday 12th August 2016 at David Rogers Park. Maybe we can find a plaque. Here’s a map.

No cheating

victrola

I’ve heard off-hand remarks from a few people recently about “cheating” at EPACC by bringing a thermos or not drinking coffee or whatnot. There is really no such thing as cheating at coffee club. Come as you are, bring a stove or not, and ride your bike or don’t, whatever. NBD. En Plein Air Coffee Club will meet at 8am on Friday 8th July 2016 at Victrola Roastery. I’ll buy basic tea or coffee for anyone from the mailing list. Here’s a map.

Compulsory Patriotism

IMG_20160616_090059

United States v. Eichman was a 1990 Supreme Court case that struck down a federal law against desecrating the US flag. The case concerned two groups, one in Washington DC and one Seattle, who burned flags to protest the newly-passed law. The court found for the protesters and the charges of desecrating the flag were dismissed. However, the Seattle defendants were still in trouble for stealing the flag they burned from the now-demolished Capitol Hill Post Office. En Plein Air Coffee Club will meet at 8am on Friday 17th June 2016 in Cal Anderson Park, near the former post office. Here’s a map.

“Jurisdiction over navigable waters belongs to the federal government rather than states or municipalities. The federal government can determine how the waters are used, by whom, and under what conditions. It also has the power to alter the waters, such as by dredging or building dams. Generally a state or private property owner who is inconvenienced by such work has no remedy against the federal government” Navigable Waters. (n.d.) West’s Encyclopedia of American Law, edition 2. (2008). En Plein Air Coffee Club will meet at 8am on Friday 3rd June 2016 along the navigable waters of the Montlake Cut. Here’s a map.
